TRUST, LIKE THE SOUL - -
By Kermit C. Moss
Mercy me, sakes alive, and
carrot coffee!
Publilius Syrus (c. 100b.c.), the ancient philosopher opined that “trust, like the soul, once
gone, never returns”!
Never? That’s a long time, and I disagree with that;
however, I agree that it usually takes a long time, and sometimes never returns.
All of this is important today, because of the downturn so severe that it
threatens us with a long-lasting depression.
Now we find ourselves with trust gone, both in government and the economy. Let us take government first. To restore it will take a long period of honesty and competence. Somehow we must elect politicians that sincerely, diligently, and honestly work for the good of the people, rather than the good of the party.
Getting the voting public better educated is important.
The problem of the economy is even worse! Uncontrolled, rampant human greed has been of such magnitude as to produce unimaginable fear! Somehow we must restore competition such that we will have many hard-working, competing business, rather than a few very large ones, some so large that we think that we can’t let them fail! And this writer sincerely believes that the one thing that we must do, if we are to save or economic system and our democracy, is to rein in the outlandish salaries of too many CEOs. $25,000 to $30,000 per hour, while my friend of the pen, Hardlee Makinit, with a wife and one child, makes some $20,000!
He who has
lost honor can lose nothing more.
