POLITICAL THOUGHTS

By Kermit C. Moss

The news, on TV, in newspapers, and on the Internet, has been full of the American desire for change, and the positions of each one of the candidates on various issues; but very little has been said about the need for and the desire for honesty, competence, and transparency in government. In this writer's thinking, this is the most important change that we need to make. We must get back to a situation where most of us both honor and trust our government. The George Bush administration is at or near the top in terms of actively promoting such distrust, both at home and abroad. It is time for a change!

How do we do it? The opinion here is that we need to amend our federal and state constitutions, to require higher qualifications for high public offices. No more of this business of running those who have enough money to buy the office! Or those in the oil or other business that stand to make a pot full of money from a war! This change needs to be quick and consequential. This writer suggests something like a series of written examinations, with only the top two or three allowed to seek these offices! Put this together with changes in the tax laws that reverse the current repaid concentration of wealth in the hands of a few, and a realization that the labor market is as important, if not more important, than the stock market!

We, in the preamble to our constitution say that one of our purposes is to "promote the general welfare", and in our declaration of independence, that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with the rights to the "pursuit of happiness " Now, tell me if you will, how a man with a family who is healthy and fully qualified and prepared to work, but cannot find a job, has any hope of being happy! This writer, while a strong supporter of capitalism, realizes that it often does not provide for full employment, and thus in its pure form, fails to promote the general welfare, making the pursuit of happiness a wild goose chase!. And, that when left alone, human greed soon takes over! So, the opinion here is that capitalism should be closely regulated, and that the use of government power to create jobs is a sensible, worthy endeavor aimed at promoting the general welfare and the actual finding of happiness!

Justification for the above? The saving of our beloved democracy!
