BLANCHE LINCOLN’S PROBLEM

By Kermit C. Moss

Mercy me, sakes alive, and carrot coffee!

Blanche Lincoln has a problem! A recent poll showed her political status to be weak for an incumbent, with only a 45 percent favorable rating on her work, while 40 percent disapproved. Her problem, as viewed from this keyboard, is that she runs as a Democrat while her voting record and political attitude show her to be a half-donkeyed Republican.

Coming as she does from a family of wealthy farmers, she, along with our other pseudo Democrat senator, wants to eliminate the estate tax, a tax which now affects less than 2% of our population, and is imposed, not on the decedent, but on those who inherit from the decedent. This means that it is imposed only on the super wealthy!

They say that they are worried about small, family businesses that can’t be passed on down to family members because of the estate tax; and some of the trouble evolves from the federal definition of a “small” business. For example, in California it must have 100 or fewer employees, and annual gross receipts of $12 million or less for the past three years. And it is ridiculously high in all the states!

The facts are that no truly small businesses has any need to fear the estate tax. So I hereby challenge Blanche and Mark Pryor to name several of the businesses in Arkansas that face such a problem or have faced it in the past.
