AUTO INDUSTRY BAILOUTS
By Kermit C. Moss
Mercy me, sakes alive, and carrot coffee!
What will now happen to the auto industry, our last
large manufacturing business? It appears that the Republicans in the senate have
killed the attempt at a bailout. And I agree with them that the union workers
should have to bear more of the burden. The CEOs have agreed to work for $1 per
year until this crisis blows over, but what about all those other administrators
with bloated salaries? If not prevented by law they most likely will just again
budget themselves with outlandish multi-million dollar salaries!
In the past some of those dollar hogs have budgeted themselves salaries that amount to $25,000 to $30,000 per hour! Whatever happened to the reasonable compensation concept? It is the opinion here that at least two things must be done to preserve our political democracy and our capitalistic economy. Otherwise, ultimately it will all be lost:
Total CEO and other administrative pay must be restricted to a reasonable relationship to other workers pay; and
Competition must be restored throughout the
economy. We must find a way to rid
our economy of firms that are too big to fail, and therefore must be bailed
out by taxpayers!
I note that the Bank of America now plans to lay off some 35,000 workers. All our citizens, including the rich, fare better when there is relatively full employment.
Lay on MacDuff!
