AFGHANISTAN, THE
GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES
By Kermit C. Moss
Mercy me, sakes alive, and
carrot coffee!
What can and should we do
about the war in Afghanistan? We have now been there for over 8 years, nearly
as long as we were in Vietnam, and no end is yet in sight!
Seth G. Jones has a book out with this same
title, and as reported on the Internet, several others have written about
it. Also, these articles point out that in the last 2,000 years, no foreign
country has been able to go in there and force its will on the people of
Afghanistan. Both Great Britain and the Soviet Union tried it and lost!
We, the United States, went in after they
kidnapped and wrecked some of our commercial airplanes, killing some 3,000
Americans; and we had great initial success, but since that time the Taliban
has been making a comeback with the help of al Qaeda.
The fear at this keyboard is that the aim of
both these foes is to keep us at war indefinitely, while draining us dry of
financial resources! And they have already made a good start!
Also, many of them view us as occupiers and
want us to leave. Besides that, what right do we have to use our military to
force our way of life on these people?
Think about it!
